Fertilizer
A good fertilizer has many benefits including creating a thicker, more dense lawn. This makes it weed and pest resistant. It also ensures a longer health of the lawn as the fertilizer is feeding the soil, which retains the nutrients. Its like a multi-vitamin for your lawn.
You want to make sure you are purchasing a cool-season grass fertilizer. Given our climate, it is recommended to fertilize in early spring and early fall, approximately 1 month prior to the first frost.
Simply follow the instruction provided on the packaging as it will describe what type of fertilizer it is and how much to apply given the necessary space. Laying too much fertilizer will burn your lawn, and not laying enough will result in a less effective application. Use a spreader which can measure the volume of application.
Apply the fertilizer to a dry lawn and water a lot, but not too much that the water washes away and pools the fertilizer in spots. This will burn your lawn as before.
All fertilizers contain Nitrogen (rapid growth and deep green colour), Phosphorous (root development), and Potassium (overall health including disease resistance, drought and cold protection). In spring, the best lawn fertilizer is often one with a 20-5-10 (NPK) mix. 25-5-5 (NPK) formula fertilizers are often the best choice for the fall months. Any application with any variation of nutrients will still be helpful and make a difference, however getting the right combination of nutrients will make a difference.
